Cuth's Elections Guide
Many of the positions available in the JCR are filled by an election. This guide helps you through what is a (perhaps surprisingly) simple and easy process. These guides are just an overview, before you run in any election please have a look at the full election rules here!
Elections are run by GovComm, specifically the Senior Returning Officer (SRO) and their team of Junior Returning Officers (JROs). If you want to find out when a position will be run check the election calendar, or if you have a more detailed question you can check the Election FAQ.
If you have any other questions or want help with anything at all, don’t hesitate to contact Alfie, the SRO, at sro@cuths.com.
Method 1
Method 1 in 7 simple steps
- 7 days before the JCR meeting (at any time of day) you can start to find a proposer and seconder;
- By 7pm three days before the JCR meeting, submit your manifesto, 200-word summary manifesto, poster, and (optionally) a photo for DUVS;
- From 7pm two days before the JCR meeting, you may ask up to three others to join your campaign team (your proposer, seconder, and optionally up to three others are your campaign team – nobody else can campaign for you);
- Come along to the JCR meeting with 2 copies of your poster and 2 copies of your manifesto printed;
- Hust for three minutes and be ready to take questions;
- From midnight after the meeting, campaign for 48 hours;
- The winner is announced the day after voting closes!
Notes
- All materials should be submitted to sro@cuths.com.
- Speak to the incumbent of the position you’re running for before your election, they can give you tips.
- You and your team can change your profile picture to campaign profile pictures/frames, but you need to get the SRO’s approval first!
- All other social media campaign posts or messages should contain your manifesto or poster, plus the corresponding manifesto or poster of any other candidates.
- You are responsible for your campaign team’s conduct, so make sure they know the election rules as well.
- If you have any complaints about the conduct of other candidates, report it as soon as possible to the SRO!
- If you’re running for President or FCO, there’s a few extra rules you can find in the standing orders!
Do’s and Don’ts
Do:
- Read the full election rules here. (this is mandatory!)
- Campaign on social media but always include your manifesto or poster in any post or message, alongside any other candidate’s corresponding manifesto or poster.
- Change your profile picture (or your campaign team’s) to campaign (if you want), but submit the pictures to the SRO for approval first.
- Posters and manifestos should be A4 and include your name, position you’re running for, signature, a photo of yourself, and the Cuth’s crest on your poster and manifesto.
- Consult the Election FAQ or get in contact at sro@cuths.com if you have any concerns or questions!
Don’t:
- Campaign before voting has started – keep it just to your campaign team!
- Put up any additional posters, the SRO will do this for you!
- Negative campaign, affiliate yourself with other JCR members, bribe voters, use offensive language, or coerce candidates or voters.
Campaign Materials and Husts
If you want some help with writing a hust, consult the Hust Bank to find examples of husts from the past.
Manifestos typically cover your experience (though no experience is necessary for any JCR role!) and your ideas for the position. Check out the examples below for some ideas on how they might be formatted.
Method 2
Method 2 in 3 simple steps
- Come along to the JCR meeting and let the SRO know you’re running;
- Hust for 1 minute and take questions;
- Voting happens in the meeting, no campaigning allowed!
Notes
- Like all JCR positions, Method 2 positions are no experience needed – all you need is ideas for the role!
- You can hold up to 2 Method 2 or 3 (application) positions at once.
