What is the JCR?

The Junior Common Room (JCR) offers the perfect way to shape your University experience into the way you want it. When you become a member of the JCR, you can challenge the way we do things, making suggestions and bringing ideas forward. The JCR is the name given to our student body, both Undergraduate and Postgraduate, which is led by the student Executive Committee and the sabbatical President. Within the JCR there are several committees explained below.

Representation

As mentioned above, you shape your experience at Cuth's. The best way to do this is by coming to JCR meetings, where we discuss and make changes to the way we function. We also have elections at JCR meetings where you can run for positions within the JCR to become responsible for certain aspects of it such as the facilities, a position on a committee or to represent a certain group within our community. We have a Students' Union representative who then takes relevant issues to the SU, and the President works with college staff, other JCR Presidents around the Uni and University staff to represent our views on a University-wide level.

Events

Cuth's JCR organised our own events, run by students, for students. Our three main events of the year are the Michaelmas Ball, The Feast of St Cuthbert and Cuth's Day. More details can be found of the Events section of this site. Social committee also put on a number of smaller events throughout the year. In the past we've had small events themed around Chinese New Year, Hallowe'en, The Superbowl and lots more.

Sports & Societies

There are over 30 Sports and Societies in Cuth's that you can get involved with, no matter what your level of previous experience. We have a huge variety of things to try, but if there is a sport or society that we don't currently have that you think people would enjoy, you can create your own society and apply for funding from the JCR. Our clubs and teams are a great way to get to know people, so get involved as soon as you can!

Welfare

Our JCR Welfare Officers provide a free, confidential listening and signposting service for any member of the JCR who is struggling with anything at all. They work together with the College Student Support staff to provide support. We also have a Welfare Campaigns Team who raise awareness of various welfare issues throughout the year.

Outreach

Our Outreach Committee provide volunteering opportunities for JCR members. They plan projects, fundraise for charity and recruit volunteers to take part in various activities.

Library

Our library is the only student-run library in the University. If you're looking for a bit of work experience whilst at Uni, you can volunteer in the Library or take on a paid role as a Stock Manager. The library is for Cuth's students only, and we can order in books you need to save you some money.
